FNTS has awarded four Women in Tech Scholarships to Omaha-area high school students who plan to pursue a college degree in an information technology-related field.
Scholarship recipients include Lyla Zornic from Millard South High School and Sahori Garcia Medrano, Nancy Martinez-Silva and Madeline Gates from Omaha Bryan High School. Each student received a $500 Women in Tech Scholarship.
FNTS, an Omaha data center, cloud and managed IT services provider, created the scholarship program as part of the company’s commitment to invest in growing the tech talent pipeline and increase diversity in the industry.
“We’d like to congratulate these students for their accomplishments,” said FNTS President Kim Whittaker. “Women still remain widely underrepresented in IT and tech-adjacent roles. Our goal is to encourage these young women to pursue their dreams in the IT field. We are eager to see how they will fuel the future of technology.”
According to a 2021 Women in Tech report, while gender equality in the tech sector has improved, 35% of women working in IT said the lack of female representation made them hesitant to enter their profession. In addition, only 19% of women said they had a female IT mentor.
Each summer, FNTS hosts a Women in Tech initiative to inspire young women to consider future careers in technology.
This year’s scholarship applications were reviewed by an independent committee of volunteers. FNTS consulted with local school foundations to identify schools that would benefit from the scholarships.
